The Brook

Portrait of Alfred Lord Tennyson
Alfred Lord Tennyson 1809–1892

I come from haunts of coot and hern, I make a sudden sally And sparkle out among the fern, To bicker down a valley.

By thirty hills I hurry down, Or slip between the ridges, By twenty thorpes, a little town, And half a hundred bridges.

Till last by Philip's farm I flow To join the brimming river, For men may come and men may go, But I go on for ever.

I chatter over stony ways, In little sharps and trebles, I bubble into eddying bays, I babble on the pebbles.

With many a curve my banks I fret By many a field and fallow, And many a fairy foreland set With willow-weed and mallow.

I chatter, chatter, as I flow To join the brimming river, For men may come and men may go, But I go on for ever.

I wind about, and in and out, With here a blossom sailing, And here and there a lusty trout, And here and there a grayling,

And here and there a foamy flake Upon me, as I travel With many a silvery waterbreak Above the golden gravel,

And draw them all along, and flow To join the brimming river For men may come and men may go, But I go on for ever.

I steal by lawns and grassy plots, I slide by hazel covers; I move the sweet forget-me-nots That grow for happy lovers.

I slip, I slide, I gloom, I glance, Among my skimming swallows; I make the netted sunbeam dance Against my sandy shallows.

I murmur under moon and stars In brambly wildernesses; I linger by my shingly bars; I loiter round my cresses;

And out again I curve and flow To join the brimming river, For men may come and men may go, But I go on for ever.

The Brook - is an eternal yet ethereal view of Life.Erodes old traditions & builds new boundaries - all at once.Never stopping. No Lapse.Seemingly without any purpose, without motive, just winding in & out - chalking Life from its bubbles.

The Brook is beautiful and brilliant poem written with passion. It shows us, in a very metaphoric way, a life with ups and downs. It also shows us that somewhere out there, happiness awaits us.

The use of poetic devices such as alliterations and similies prove to be very effective. They add to the deep meaning and emotions shown by the poem.

  4. priyanka India

the poem the brook does not only sybolise the eternal flow of the water but is also parallel to the ages of man and the immortal journey of the soul : the youth when the mind and soul bubble and chatter with energy, the middle ages where one is the life support system for the others and the old age where one is calm, srene and ready to meet the eternal father.

  5. Jana India

The poem is so real if it can be compared to real life. Life and brook.

The powerful lines: Man may come, Man may go, ..I will go on forever.
We can learn from the 'Brook' that no matter how important we think we are to an establishment or institution, there will come a time we have to gracefully fade and leave for others to continue. One cannot cling on indefinitely as if he/she is indispensible.

    THE BROOK, SIMPLY AWESOME,
    INSPIRES EVERYBODY NOT ONLY SOME...
IT'S LITTLE BIT CONNECTED TO THE THREE AGES OF A MAN,
    THAT TEACHES : DON'T LOOSE HOPE B'CAUSE U CAN.....
NOT ONLY WRITTEN IN SIMPLE WORDS,
HAVING CHARACTERS LIKE PEBBLES AND BIRDS......
IT'S ABOUT THE IMMORTALITY OF THE BROOK,
IF WE CAREFULLY MAKE A LOOK......
    FINALLY, IT REACHED ITS DESTINATION,
BY MERGING INTO A BIG WIDE OCEAN.........

JUST LIKE THE JOURNEY OF THE BROOK, HUMAN LIFE ALSO PASSES THROUGH MANY UPS AND DOWNS, HIGHS AND LOWS. IT HAS TO OVERCOME MANY HURDLES AND DIFFICULTIES. YET LIKE THE BROOK, IT MUST MOVE TOWARDS ITS DESTINATION. IT SHOULD BE AS USEFUL AND FRUITFUL TO OTHERS AS THE LIFE OF THE BROOK IS. HUMAN BEINGS MUST LEARN TO TAKE JOYS AND SORROWS IN THIERT STRIDE AND KEEP MOVING EVER PNWARDS. THAT IS THE MESSAGE THE POEM GIVES US

  10. RAJESH India

THE BROOK IS A BITTER YET REALITY OF HUMAN LIFE THAT WE NEED TO LEARN FROM THE SMALL BUT LIFE SIZE ETERNAL BROOK THAT TELLS US THAT THOUGH LIFE OR LIFE MAY BE SMALL BUT ITS THE APPROACH THAT WE ADOPT AND LIVE IT .THE FIGURES OF SPEECH USED MAKE IT A REMARKABLE PHILOSOPHICAL POEM.

I actually don't want to comment on the poem but on the phrase quoted in the subject bar. I heard this phrase on an audio tape of a popular author's work and wondered at its origins. Thus my search which led me here. Thank you to whomever is responsible for posting it. I don't know what a coot or a hern is yet but that'll be my next quest.

it is a personification!!A beautiful parellelism drawn between life and the brook!Teaches us to face the highs and the lows,up's and down's with equanimity1The twist's and the turns make the journey challenging & exciting.welcome life with open arms!

  14. saryu rishi India

The Brook is a philsophical poem.the style of the poem is apt as in small sentences the poet conveys the quickness of the brook and the refrain makes one stop for a while and think that one is not at all indispensable

  15. Dolly Dhawan India

The poem shows the perennial nature of the brook as against mortal existence of man. The poem leaves us a message to have a strong will-power and move forward crossing all our hurdles in life to achieve our ultimate ambition.

  19. Subhajit Sikder India

The brook here symbolise the journey of a man whereas the man is mortal but the brook is immortal and perenial.

A poet like Tennyson had the gift of converting visuals into words. He saw the stream of water coming out of the womb of the high mountains rushing and gushing with all its energy down the hills. At its birth it very well knew its destination. It was heading for embracing and merging with the Waters. The poet was simply delighted with the sheer beauty of the nature and the dancing, cavorting, gushing stream passing…

At its birth it very well knew its destination. It was heading for embracing and merging with the Waters.
The poet was simply delighted with the sheer beauty of the nature and the dancing, cavorting, gushing stream passing through the terrain in front of his eyes. Countless number of people must have seen the same scene and just passed by.It took Tennyson, a poet( as only a poet can do)to pick up a" paint brush" (a pen)and make a" word painting ". Read the poem and the visions of a beautiful painting described in words is there for you to delight in 'the artist's' work and visualise the beauty of the NATURE as the poet saw it.

Ah! what a pleasure it is to read this poem...so wonderfully visual, so wonderfully audible...the music flows over you and mesmerizes you. Looking into the content you find a wealth of meaning hidden behind these cute little rhymes. Man keeps getting born into this world, but he goes away after his destined timespan, but Nature continues till Eternity. We all go to join our creator, but nature remains.

The poem amazingly describes the life of not a man but the life of human beings. It also shows the loneliness of a man in this stormy world and there is no one to console him in his troubles. And this harsh reality that man is mortal.
