Speak Roughly is Lewis Carroll's parody of the gentle and lovely 1840's poem Speak Gently, attributed to one David Bates. The opening verse of Speak Gently is: "Speak gently! -- It is better far / To rule by love, than fear -- / Speak gently -- let not harsh words mar / The good we might do here!"
