Everyone Sang

Portrait of Siegfried Sassoon
Siegfried Sassoon 1886–1967

Everyone suddenly burst out singing; And I was filled with such delight As prisoned birds must find in freedom, Winging wildly across the white Orchards and dark-green fields; on--on--and out of sight.

Everyone's voice was suddenly lifted; And beauty came like the setting sun: My heart was shaken with tears; and horror Drifted away ... O, but Everyone Was a bird; and the song was wordless; the singing will never be done.

The poet uses a metaphor when comparing the speaker to a bird in line 3 "as prisioned birds musr find in freedom". this helps the reader understand exaclty how the spaker felt when everyone stared singing. it reinforces te intensity of his delight. like freedom comes to a bird who could have lost all hopes of living outside of his imprisionment, this delight comes filled with not only happnines, but aldo relief and hope.
The simile of the sunset in like 7 reinforces the closure of the momoment's idealism and feedom. as the sunset marks the end of the day, the speaker also expresses his feelings towards the end of what brought such horror. however, after the sunset, comes the night. the poet could have used the word sunrise instead of sunset, marking the end of bad times and the approach of good times. using the word sunset, he reinforced the idea that, ike the sun, beauty fades away and reality takes over.
In line 9, the poet uses another simile, "everyone was a bird; and the song was wordless; the singin will never be done". the poet makes "everyone" the "prisioned birds", but because the song is "wordless", the possibility of "freedom" can never be achieved. Because the words cannot be expressed, people no longer have an outlet for joy or escape.

    brief analysis

when i read this poem i obtained that the speaker shows me a beautiful picture for group of people singing in delightful like prisoned birds when they find freedom .Then the birds winging fasly in the wide horizon passing the green fields and gradually became out of sight. The loudness of their singing as beauty of sunsetin the sky.then he describes his feeling as sensetive one. at the end he obtained areal truth that bevery body is like abird will fly(pass away from this life one day)and the songs becomes wordless and no one will sing i.
