The poem
Break, break, break, On thy cold gray stones, O Sea! And I would that my tongue could utter The thoughts that arise in me.
O, well for the fisherman's boy, That he shouts with his sister at play! O, well for the sailor lad, That he sings in his boat on the bay!
And the stately ships go on To their haven under the hill; But O for the touch of a vanish'd hand, And the sound of a voice that is still!
Break, break, break At the foot of thy crags, O Sea! But the tender grace of a day that is dead Will never come back to me.
Tennyson represented his age through this poem as he was disturbed by the industrialism and the shking of tradition and religious believes.
this was an intresting poem. i saw the feelings of the author and went deep inside. but i do have one question... what does it mean?????
It seems to me that this also a struggle with his own faith, since he discusses the innocence and carefree actions of children, and then mentions the touch of a vanished hand (seems like God to me) and a voice that is still reminds me of a "still small voice".

'Break, break, break' is influenced by the poet's grief over the death of his close friend, Arthur Henry Hallam, a theme which Tennyson further explored in 'In Memoriam A.H.H.' which was written over a period of seventeen years.

The feelings of the loss of a friend shown in this poem go very deep and by reading the poem you can tell he wrote it when he was emotional about the subject and was reflecting on their childhood happiness and memories in the second stanza shown by the words saying that he was playing with his sister and singing in the bay which is in contrast to the rest of the poems bleak mood. In the third stanza he expresses his longing the touch of his friends vanished hand, and the sound of his friend’s voice.
Break, Break, Break shows alliteration, repetition, onomatopoeia and assonance. It uses alliteration with the three B’s (Break, Break, Break). It also uses repetition in the form of saying Break, three times. It uses onomatopoeia because the word Break, sounds a bit like something breaking. Assonance is also used because it uses 3 of the same vowel sounds (Break, Break, Break). Break, Break, Break sets the bleak mood for the poems because it is dull words and sounds angry when you say it. Also a technique Tennyson has used it by rhyming every second and 4th line in the Stanzas. This helps the poem to flow.

Tennyson seems to recall his childhood days in this poem,he remembers the way he enjoyed with his sister n his close friend Arthur,he shows all this lively to us in this poem through fisherman's boy character,it shows his presence of mind at the same time he shows deep grief forthe loss of his Friend Arthur,he shows the deep love that he had on Arthur.

The grief appears to be affecting his work and because of this he feels ‘cut-off’ from others. there is a bitterness there when the poet notices the small boy ha no troubles at this time in his life. Basically saying ‘God help them when they are older”.

This poem has three themes. first, the grief, the poet grieves about lossing his young friend. Second,Showing how the youth is pericless in this world. He gives images of youghful joy in the middle of the poem. Third, he laments cold this world and how it goes on indifferent way regardless of what happen is good or bad, that is in the last part of the poem.

In my idea the poem is an elegy.The speaker is describing
a sad experience in own life which makes him disappointed. According to poet,s biography, the poem can be about his friend,s death Hallam!
