Absence

Portrait of Elizabeth Jennings
Elizabeth Jennings 1926–2001

I visited the place where we last met. Nothing was changed, the gardens were well-tended, The fountains sprayed their usual steady jet; There was no sign that anything had ended And nothing to instruct me to forget.

The thoughtless birds that shook out of the trees, Singing an ecstasy I could not share, Played cunning in my thoughts. Surely in these Pleasures there could not be a pain to bear Or any discord shake the level breeze.

It was because the place was just the same That made your absence seem a savage force, For under all the gentleness there came An earthquake tremor: Fountain, birds and grass Were shaken by my thinking of your name.

it is so difficult to express what death of a dear person means, so I think that this poem very directly represents death through the effect it has on the one who is left:
gone forever, and only memory, like a dream, comes back to recreate the image of the past, and to represent to one's living spirit the enormity of the event

I kept remembering this poem after my ex-boyfriend left my city to go back to his home in another country. I realized I could not live in my city anymore as every place I went to reminded me of the times we spent together. So I finally found a way to leave my city, even my country to learn to let go. It is always easier for the one who leaves than for the one who is left behind.

This is one of the heartwrenching pieces of writing Ihave ever read. Now that Ihave reached the three score and ten lifespan mentioned in The bible, it is to be expected I have suffered many losses through broken romances , friendships and deaths. This poem,Ifeel was written for me.it is beautiful not too wordy and yet every word is loadedwith pain of grief a pain only time will heal if at all
