Poem: To My Wife - With A Copy Of My Poems

I can write no stately proem As a prelude to my lay; From a poet to a poem I would dare to say.

For if of these fallen petals One to you seem fair, Love will waft it till it settles On your hair.

And when wind and winter harden All the loveless land, It will whisper of the garden, You will understand.

  3. billy mccorbert United Kingdom

this is a good poem but where are all the metapors

  4. Maria Ramirez United States

A metaphor is implied in the second stanza as the author's poems are compared to fallen petals (flowers.
In the same stanza, love becomes tangible in the form of his poems. In the last stanza, his poems/love will whisper of life and what is beatiful when winter handens the land above his dead wife.

Hi, I have a dilemma-this poem was written before he had a wife, so could someone please explain why he wrote it to his 'wife'?

Your poem is very good, however sometimes the beet is off.

Jesus Christ...I never believed it when people said Americans were clueless. For example, amanda cameron says 'i like your poem very much!' and even worse "gen from Canada" - 'your poem is very good but sometimes off beet'.
Its Oscar Wilde!!! - one of the most famous authors to have ever lived!!! Its like me replying personally to shakespere telling him how much I like/dislike his work and whether he could be send me an e-mail on how to write plays!!

Poems don't HAVE TO have metaphors it's the authors choice and I believe it's a great poem and it shouldn't need metaphors to make it better. Oh and Jo from US you spelt metaphors wrong.

  10. Ben United States

Hey, before posting stupid responses, try figuring out if the poet is famous or not. You're making Americans look even dumber than we are.

this poem was written to Oscar Wilde's wife, in favor that she understood about his homosexual affairs , ( mostly with Alfred Douglas) . to all the stupid people out there , he died in 1900, therefor there is not way he can read your emails. so respect his work and put up decent comments. thank you for your time.

Why can't I write such beautiful words? How long did it take. I write the odd poem for my wife's greetings cards but they don't hold a candle to this. Never mind the metaphors, stanza's or whatever, Oscar sure wrote some good stuff.

I think anyone who knows a thing about poetry would realise that Mr. Wilde is dead but Julie I do agree with you on one thing people should be respectful of him so with that said I would like to thank everyone who left a nice comment and those of you who did not well you will get what you get and be who you are weather its right or not...

  26. palminator United States

In the first line, did Wilde intentionally spell "Proem" or is that just a typo. I've seen multiple websites with this spelling.

My Favourite poem in the whole world Louis MacNeice Prayer before BirthI am not yet born; O hear me.Let not the bdsnlouckiog bat or the rat or the stoat or the club-footed ghoul come near me.I am not yet born, console me.I fear that the human race may with tall walls wall me, with strong drugs dope me, with wise lies lure me, on black racks rack me, in blood-baths roll me.I am not yet born; provide meWith water to dandle me, grass to grow for me, trees to talk to me, sky to sing to me, birds and a white light in the back of my mind to guide me.I am not yet born; forgive meFor the sins that in me the world shall commit, my words when they speak me, my thoughts when they think me, my treason engendered by traitors beyond me, my life when they murder by means of my hands, my death when they live me.I am not yet born; rehearse meIn the parts I must play and the cues I must take when old men lecture me, bureaucrats hector me, mountains frown at me, lovers laugh at me, the white waves call me to folly and the desert calls me to doom and the beggar refuses my gift and my children curse me.I am not yet born; O hear me,Let not the man who is beast or who thinks he is God come near me.I am not yet born; O fill meWith strength against those who would freeze my humanity, would dragoon me into a lethal automaton, would make me a cog in a machine, a thing with one face, a thing, and against all those who would dissipate my entirety, would blow me like thistledown hither and thither or hither and thither like water held in the hands would spill me.Let them not make me a stone and let them not spill me.Otherwise kill me.
