The Hidden Law

Portrait of W. H. Auden
W. H. Auden 1907–1973

The Hidden Law does not deny Our laws of probability, But takes the atom and the star And human beings as they are, And answers nothing when we lie.

It is the only reason why No government can codify, And verbal definitions mar The Hidden Law.

Its utter patience will not try To stop us if we want to die; If we escape it in a car, If we forget It in a bar, These are the ways we're punished by The Hidden Law.

This is the 100th aniversary of Auden's birth. Join me in emailing those organising the centenary and trying to persuade them to allow Auden's (largely over rated - but that's another story) poems to appear here.

This copyright abuse is no way to celebrate the life of a famous Socialist poet.

Alternatively and pro tem we could replace all of Auden's poem's by copies of e.e. cummings' Flotsam and Jetsam generally believed to refer to him and Isherwood.
