The poem
I Dreamt a Dream! what can it mean? And that I was a maiden Queen: Guarded by an Angel mild; Witless woe, was neer beguil'd!
And I wept both night and day And he wip'd my tears away And I wept both day and night And hid from him my hearts delight
So he took his wings and fled: Then the morn blush'd rosy red: I dried my tears & armd my fears, With ten thousand shields and spears.
Soon my Angel came again; I was arm'd, he came in vain: For the time of youth was fled And grey hairs were on my head
The angel represents Love
The poem is about someone who loves somebody else.But that person does not love them and has know idea that they are loved by that person .
"So he took hiswings and fled"
This symbolises that "he" goes off with someone else .
"I dried my tears and armed my fears "
The person who loves "he" is upset ,but gets over it and becomes a stronger person.
At the end of the poem "he" finally realises that he has made a mistake , and goes back to the person who used to love "him".
But it is to late because that person does not love him anymore , and has moved on. ( "I was armed he came in vain" ).( " And grey hairs were on my head").
