Composed Upon Westminster Bridge

Portrait of William Wordsworth
William Wordsworth 1770–1850

Earth has not anything to show more fair: Dull would he be of soul who could pass by A sight so touching in its majesty: This City now doth like a garment wear The beauty of the morning; silent , bare, Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie Open unto the fields, and to the sky, All bright and glittering in the smokeless air. Never did the sun more beautifully steep In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill; Ne'er saw I, never felt a calm so deep! The river glideth at his own sweet will: Dear God! the very houses seem asleep; And all that mighty heart is lying still!

while reading william's background on how he sets his thought to write it is not effective since he uses the help of opium instead of writing with clear thought on how he views nature.

For anyone whose interested: William Blake's 'London' is interesting to contrast against this - while Wordsworth praises the beauty of the city as much as he does other natural sights, a rarety in the realms of the Romantic poets, Blake condemns it but only in terms of the people in it.

Dorothy Wordsworth in her Journal July 31, 1802, described the scene as she and her brother left London, early in the morning, for their month-long visit to Calais: "It was a beautiful morning. The city, St. Paul's, with the river, and a multitude of little boats, made a most beautiful sight as we crossed Westminster Bridge. The houses were not overhung by their cloud of smoke, and they were spread out endlessly, yet the sun shone so brightly, with such a fierce light; that there was something like the purity of one of nature's own grand spectacles."

Basically shows how beautiful London is, when it is quiet and people are asleep. Particularly word "smokeless", poets generally writing, dont mention that it was not smokeless- whne they are decribing the natural beauty neither do they choose a city to describe the beayty, it is generally the landscapes. And london being a city always related with problems of smoke, it is very eye catching! Also, the use of personification-= Heart when the city meant the city heart is very noticable.

This is a beautiful poem, though I prefer London by Blake.. it uses a far more profound detailing of imagery. I have a coursework on this poem to hand in for tomorrow, so crap!.. Again, much remarks.. Henleux

Well at least I had to read this poem for about six times before to understand it. Then I was grasping a kind of weak idea of the author`s viewpoint. So I thought that the speaker was the same as the author 'cos of the highlighted idea of see nature in a landscape where there was a new city trying to rise in an uncertain historical place. The author became a sensitive speaker reflecting his most inner feelings about London and its population. Definitely, I really believe the speaker was in a deep moment of reflection about the moment London was suffering.

I feel that this poem meant much more to the writer and to the readers at the time it was written. Please could the publication date be posted on the poems?

This is my favourite poem in the entire world because of the way it is written but also because of it's precise description of every aspect of what Wordsworth is seeing. Every minute piece of beauty is described so that the reader can vividly see it in his/her own mind. Loved it and love reading it time and time again!
